Welcome, my name is Haley Smith, I am currently a student at the University of Rhode Island majoring in Biological Science B.S., Secondary Education, B.A. and specializing in General Science with a Middle School endorsement. I am from a tiny suburban town Auburn New Hampshire where I grew up on a 3 acre "farm" with 8 goats and 20 odd chickens and one over protective turkey. I went to Manchester Memorial High School an inner city high school where I graduated in the top 10. I currently live in Kingston, Rhode Island with my two cats, whom I love more than anything. They are my princesses and I am their crazy cat lady mama. Since coming to the Ocean State I have fallen in love with its coasts and currently am an avid sea glass collector. I have always loved nature and the science behind it all, and spend most of my days off hiking or exploring new places seeking new knowledge wherever I go.
Link to Unit Plan High school students are going through many biological and physical changes. They are very curious to find out more about how and why these changes occur. This unit will give students a basic introduction to genetics and provide students with an understanding the role DNA plays coding for proteins that produce physical, inheritable traits in offspring. Through an understanding of genetics, students can learn about these changes and why they may have certain physical characteristics. Students will be able to understand where their traits come from and how genetics determines the diversity of life around them.
